RETRACTABLE TONNEAU COVERS:

Retractable tonneau covers are a type of hard tonneau cover, and as the name implies, retractable.

These covers consist of a series of hard panels that roll up into a canister mounted at the front of your truck bed.

The cover sits in (and slides) along a channel mounted to both sides of your truck's bed-rails. The retractable feature of these covers eliminates the need to take the cover off when you need to carry larger cargo that would not normally fit with the cover in the closed position.

A certain amount of cargo space is lost because of the size of the canister, but this lost space is generally minimal and the canister itself is not seen when the cover is extended and closed.

Retractable covers are nearly flush with the top of your truck's bed-rails.

Your truck bed "stake hole pockets" are still usable (on most brands) even with the cover extended. This allows for the use of a "ladder rack system" or something similar with your cover.

The individual panels that comprise the cover are usually made of either:

• Aluminum (with either a black powder-coat finish, baked on enamel, vinyl or polymer coating)
• Extruded plastic

Most of these retractable cover manufacturers claim their tonneau cover is weather-tight.

Some of these covers are able to be installed just with the included clamps and others require some slight drilling.
