Tonneau Covers World - Astro Tonneau Covers:With production facilities in Dexter, Michigan and Garnett, Kansas, Astro is able to service a network of over 400 local truck cover and accessory stores from coast to coast. Astro was founded in 1962 and has been building quality truck covers now for over thirty five years. Astro started in Elkhart, Indiana (1962) producing aluminum truck caps for Dwayne Stutz Stutz Industries. One year later in 1963, Astro production switched to producing their own products under the Astro brand name, selling and delivering to a network of Astro dealers. The products being produced consisted of aluminum framed slide in campers and aluminum caps. In 1964, Astro had to move to a larger facility to accommodate the additional production requirements. In this facility Aluminum Truck Caps, Aluminum Frame Campers and Kits for Aluminum Caps were being manufactured. Four years later in 1968, Astro moved into a larger 100,000 sq. ft. facility in Elkhart to add yet another product line. With additional space and production capabilities, sub assemble plants were opened in Texas and Maine to assemble the aluminum kits being produced in Elkhart. The present facility in Dexter, Michigan was built in 1972. This facility was to house the manufacturing of fiberglass truck caps only. The next 22 years saw the change in manufacturing from aluminum caps to fiberglass caps and a growing network of dealers from the Mississippi River to the East Coast. In 1994, Astro made a big step of which few have tried, opening a second manufacturing facility. A new plant was opened in Garnett, Kansas servicing the Central States from Canada to Mexico, the Mississippi River to the Rockies. With the addition of the Kansas facility and good steady growth at the Michigan facility, Astro has seen its revenues explode by over 300 percent from 1993 to 1998.
